Young Drivers

Well, I was young once and drove like a maniac for a few years.  Well, I used to change gears quickly and rev the engine and such daring things like change down into 2nd at the corners rather than use the brakes.  The difference is that my car was an old Toyota Celica with a MASSIVE 2000cc engine and a few extractors and big exhaust whereas young guys have Lancers, Subaru Imprezas, Golf GTI, V8 Ford and Holden and Lancers (ok Maybe Lancers aren't that racey but they look nice) and they can go MUCH faster. Young motorbike drivers have 1000cc bikes - the comment from car drivers is that "we cannot see bikes" and bike rides have stickers saying "look out for us" ... so do cyclists for that matter.  Anyway, when bikes are weaving in and out of peak hour traffic on the inner-city bypass at high speed, YOU CANNOT SEE THEM.  They often sit annoying at the right back corner of your car, so close that even braking would cause them to crash. Back to cars and young peo...

Driving in Queensland

IS it just me or have people gone a bit freekin MENTAL You could blame in on all the "bad" drivers from Sydney and Melbourne maybe but people are tailgating like never before, pushing you along so they can "get to the shops and buy some stuff".  Big deal - we all need to do this. And what's with the cars with 4 sets of lights (sometimes on high beam).  If you have lights on high-beam that isn't supposed to be allowed but you can have 4 super-bright halogen lights in a VERY HIGH 4WD and no problems.  The 2 lower ones are FOG lamps.  WTF - when did we last have fog in Brisbane that lasted more than a few hours a couple of times a year?  People don't even know they are fog lamps and that they leave a permanent stop light (one light only) on the back lights which is obviously design for when you are hurtling down a German autobahn (fahren fahren auf den autobahn for Kraftwerk fans) and see some yellow/orange lights and try to slow down hoping there isn...

Australian Film Industry

I was at home one morning and switched on the tv with breakfast.  The ABC came on and I was watching good old Play School.  Some very talented actors are still on this program - isn't it a pity there isn't more work for them in local tv shows, dramas etc. It is a bit sad I think when you compare to the Aussie stars overseas.  Perhaps, they should just all go overseas?

Climate Change

Come on Mr Turnbull - pull your head in and lets get on with the CARBON REDUCTION.  It won't be perfect but we have to START ...

Obesity and Diabetes

Despite a federal government statement that kids are doing 30 minutes exercise at school EACH day, at my child's school, SPORT is an ENRICHMENT subject along with music. Of course, music is important and people love it but sport or physical activity, is not an ENRICHMENT but a CORE subject to keep people fit, thinking effectively and being healthy.  Kids are getting heavier and having symptoms that are previously only seen in much older sedentary office workers.  As a computer programmer, I know about sedentary lifestyle.  Moving your mouse finger really doesn't give you a good cardio workout. As you go past 40, you can expect high blood pressure, overweight, diabetes etc as you decreas activity generally but why should our kids encounter the same thing?  Surely, ever child should run and play at school to allow the maintain weight and general fitness.  Young girls are especially concious of their body shape - is it right that they might be able to play the ...

Police Actions

How is it that Police can shoot people for "lunging at them".  Is "lunging" a life-threatening action??  Why can't they be trained to shoot on the foot or better still, to subdue people.  Maybe the taser has a role here but we cannot just SHOOT PEOPLE who seem to be harming themselves and don't seem to pose a big threat. You only get so much of the story from the news but the police should be trying ALL OTHER AVENUES before resorting to FATAL shooting.
